What is carbon black pigment and what are its uses?

Carbon black is a coloring pigment primarily used in inks, coatings, plastics, paints, and other products. It is categorized by tinting strength and particle size into four types: high-pigment, medium-pigment, standard-pigment, and low-pigment. It is produced using processes such as the oil furnace and tank processes. Tank-process carbon black has a high oxygen content and an acidic surface, while furnace-process carbon black can have its properties controlled by the degree of agglomeration.

Pigment carbon black generally provides excellent coloring for plastics. Pigment carbon black can be selected based on its coloring properties or physical and chemical properties. The choice of carbon black type is largely determined by the desired blackness of the finished product. Ultra-fine pigment carbon black can achieve coloring with extremely high blackness requirements. For products such as PE garbage bags, plastic bags, and cable materials that require only a moderate blackness, carbon black grades with lower specific surface area and higher structure can be used. When coloring plastics, even slight errors in carbon black weighing and batching can result in significant color variations. Therefore, it is advisable to use low-pigment carbon black with larger particle size and lower tinting strength. This allows for a slightly larger carbon black dosage, minimizes weighing errors, and offers better dispersibility and a lower price. For gray plastics, the use of fine-grained pigment carbon black often presents a brownish gray, while the use of coarse-grained pigment carbon black can produce a bluish gray.
